If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, you may have felt the downside of camping firsthand: the pain of sleeping on the ground. Often, the result of spending a night or more in a tent manifests as nagging back pain. Luckily, there are a few tips you can use to prevent discomfort and maintain back health through all of your camping plans.

Prevent Back Pain From Sleeping on the Ground

Get the Right Gear

To ensure optimal comfort and spine support while sleeping, start with the right equipment, which means having more than just a sleeping bag on hand. Bring a sleeping pad for extra cushioning to prevent your back from being flat against the hard ground. Choose the right sleeping pad for you, whether it’s an air pad, self-inflating, or closed-cell foam. If you’re hiking, you’ll need to keep your pack as light as possible, so a foam or very light air pad is best.

Make sure you’re supporting your neck, too. While a small foam or inflatable pillow may fit into your pack, you could even use a bulky piece of clothing to support your head as you sleep. Some sleeping bags also come equipped with pockets in which you can place your clothing for neck and head support.

Find the Perfect Location

Clear away any pinecones, sticks, hard rocks, or other debris which could jut out and hurt your back while you’re sleeping. On cold nights, stuff extra clothing into your sleeping bag for added comfort and warmth.
