Once you’ve signed up for your guitar lessons, the next step is to buy your instrument. Even if you’re a beginner, choose your instrument wisely as this investment will support you through your lessons. Here are a few tips to keep in mind while shopping so that you purchase a model that’s right for you.

Do:

Consider your sound.

There are three choices: classical with nylon strings, acoustic with steel strings, and electric. The type of instrument you choose will depend on the kind of guitar lesson you want to take. If you’re interested in playing rock music, electric is right for you. Acoustic is best for people who want to play country-style music. A classical guitar with nylon strings is suited for traditional music and is ideal for younger children under 12 since the strings are easier to press.

Try it out first.

guitar lessonsGuitars aren’t one-size-fits-all, so what works for someone else might not work for you. Test out the instrument in person to see how it feels in your hands, whether you can press the strings with ease, and how excited you are to play when you hold it. You’ll know when you’ve found the one.

Don’t:

Get the wrong strings.

Unforgiving strings that are too hard or high can be difficult to play for beginner fingers without calluses. Find an instrument with strings that are easier to work with. For electric guitars, look for a string action between two and 2.3 mm. For an acoustic guitar, opt for a string action between two and 2.7 mm. For a nylon string, look for three to 3.6 mm.

Fixate on name brands.

Don’t look for the most popular name brand and assume that you’re getting a high-quality instrument. Well-known brands tend to use cheap materials to create their entry-level guitars, so you may spend more for an instrument that isn’t worth the cost. Start your guitar lessons with an affordable beginner guitar, then invest in a pricier one as you improve.
