Sitting for long periods does more than make your muscles stiff and sore; it can lead to spinal and neck pain, poor posture, and reduced mobility. If you have a sedentary job where you spend more than seven hours a day sitting down, your shoulders, back, and neck may feel sore at the end of the day. Luckily, there are several stretches you can perform at your workstation to reduce muscle pressure.

4 Workstation Stretches

1. Work Those Shoulders

WorkstationSit straight and lift both shoulders upward to your ears and drop them back down. Repeat your shrugs 10 times to help loosen up tense shoulders. Rotate each shoulder in a clockwise and counterclockwise motion five times to boost circulation.

2. Stretch Your Legs

If your legs feel weak but taking a walk isn’t an option, try stretching them out at your workstation. Stand with your legs together and bend down to touch your toes. Make sure that you don’t bend your knees. This will stretch your calves and promote blood flow.

3. Give Your Wrists a Break

Repetitive movement from typing can lead to wrist soreness. Break up the repetition by taking a few minutes to stretch them out. Hold one arm out straight with your fingers pointed up. Use your other hand to gently pull your fingers back towards your body until you feel the stretching in your forearm. Hold for 15 seconds and repeat on the other side.

4. Stretch Your Back

Back pain is a serious problem for desk workers. Avoid this by taking a few minutes at a time to give it a good stretch. Put your feet together and sit perfectly straight. Place your hands on your lower back and lean back as far as you can, as if trying to lean over your hands. Do this as long as it’s comfortable.
