Sandblasting is a process in which a high-powered spray of solid particles smooths or reshapes a surface. On plastic products, sandblasting provides a finish or engraving. To better understand sandblasting and how it’s used in the manufacturing of plastic products, below are answers to common questions on the subject.

Common Questions About Sandblasting

What are the benefits of sandblasting plastic?

The primary benefit of sandblasting plastic is creating a smooth and uniform surface. It also takes on a matte finish that evenly distributes light.

What types of plastic products are sandblasted?

plastic productsThere are a number of everyday plastic items with sandblasted surfaces. One of the most common is signage. Because the matte surface discourages bright reflection, a product with lettering is often easier to read, making sandblasting ideal for larger signs posted at a distance.

How is sandblasting used for etching?

Sandblasting is also an ideal alternative to laser engraving. When a product that needs engraving is too large for the scope of a typical laser, sandblasting offers a way to etch the entire surface because the equipment is more mobile and versatile. This also makes it suitable for etching surfaces with designs that wrap around edges or contain unusual angles.

How does the etching process work?

The item is first covered with a stencil delineating the design or wording. It’s then placed in a sandblasting booth to better contain and direct the spray of the abrasive material. The material is blasted against the surface and abrades the areas not covered by the stencil. When the stencil is removed, it leaves behind the etched surface.
