An island provides additional kitchen countertop surface, more storage space, and another place for the family to gather and sit. When designing a kitchen island, however, you want to make the most efficient use of the space, while ensuring the island meets your needs. Here are a few tips to help you with this process.

How to Design a Kitchen Island

1. Consider Height Carefully

Any kitchen countertop should be at a comfortable level for working, accessing cupboards and cabinets, and having a clear view of the room and the people in it. Most islands are either 36 or 42 inches in height. If you plan on having seating, a 36-inch island is ideal for a low stool, while a 42-inch island is better-suited to a full-sized barstool. A 12-inch overhang of kitchen countertop surface around the island ensures ample leg room.

2. Create Space Around the Island

On either end of the island, plan to leave at least 3 feet of space. On the longer, working sides of the island, aim for at least 42 inches of room between the edges of the island and other furniture, cabinetry, and kitchen countertops.

3. Customize to Fit Your Exact Needs

Think about the main functions the island will serve in your kitchen, and design it accordingly. If it will be used primarily for food preparation, place it near the stove and refrigerator, and install a butcher block area and heat-resistant surfaces; a small preparation sink in the island can also be a helpful addition. For a kitchen table, edge the island countertop with soft contours for enhanced comfort. If it will be used for multiple purposes, raise the eating area to create a safe and sanitary separation between any food preparation and eating spaces.
