You may need an equipment rental for a specific project or as a loaner while your machinery is getting fixed. Whether you own or rent equipment, it’s imperative to care for it properly and use it within the limitations it’s designed for. Below are some do’s and don’ts of handling equipment rentals.

Do:

Get the right equipment for the job.

Equipment RentalRent equipment specific for the job at hand. Renting a smaller bulldozer when you need a full-sized one for the job will just create problems later. While it may be more affordable at first, you’ll have to rent the equipment for twice as long. The larger bulldozer has a bigger haul capacity and will complete the project much faster.

Make sure your crew is trained on all equipment rentals.

Not only does this apply to the operator, but also those working around the equipment. If the machinery requires a licensed operator, then allow that professional to explain to the crew how the equipment works, how to practice safety measures around the equipment—such as wear protective goggles and remain alert whenever the machine is in use—and how to properly store it at the end of the day.

Don’t:

Ignore possible problem indicators.

If the engine starts making a strange noise or one of the engine lights turns on, then call the rental agency immediately. Ignoring the issue could cause other components to malfunction and ultimately lead to system failure. If the machine breaks while in your care—and you knew the equipment needed immediate assistance but failed to take action—then you could be held liable to repair the damages.

Ignore weight capacity requirements.

If the machine has a weight limit and exceeds it, then there is a chance of the equipment rental overturning or failing at a time that could put others at risk. Make sure that anyone who operates the machinery abides by the weight limitations to avoid injuries.
