Lehigh Gorge State Park in the Poconos

History

Located outside of White Haven, PA, Lehigh Gorge State Park has been a focal point in the U.S. since 1791. A set of canals was built through it to transport coal down the Lehigh River in the 1830s. A flood damaged them in 1862, and a railroad system was erected in their place to support the logging industry.

The Lehigh Gorge became a popular tourist attraction in the early 1900s, when the Hotel Wahnetah and Glen Onoko Resort were built, though fires in 1911 and 1917 destroyed them. Realizing the importance of protecting the park, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania purchased it in 1970 and turned it over to the State Department of Conservation and Natural Resources ten years later.
