During winter, if you’re looking to try something new while enjoying the great outdoors, consider picking up skiing. This exciting sport is not only a great form of exercise, but incorporating more ski trips into your winter routine can also help you avoid developing cabin fever as you count down the days till spring. Those who are new to the slopes might not know what to expect and will need a little guidance as they prepare for their inaugural ski excursion. So before you break out your heavy parka and pack an overnight bag, here are a few important do’s and don’ts for ski trips.

Do:

Dress in layers.

You never know what the weather will hold when you take ski trips, but dressing in layers will help you to stay comfortable no matter what you encounter. Try to dress in several removable layers that wick moisture effectively, so that you can add more layers if you begin to feel cold, or remove a sweater or two as you start warming up and during practice sessions.

Take lessons.

ski tripsSkiing might look easy, but learning to stay upright on skis while navigating slippery snow can be incredibly challenging. To learn more about your equipment and master the basics, take lessons from a professional ski instructor. In addition to learning the fundamentals in terms of form, how to steer, and common safety practices, you can also make friends with other people in your beginner’s group.

Don’t:

Forget to put on sunscreen.

You can expect to be outside in the sun for a majority of your ski trip, especially while learning to ski. However, many new skiers underestimate the necessity of sunscreen and will forget to pack it. Winter weather and cold temperatures have zero impact on the power of the sun’s UV rays. The prevalence of snow further intensifies the impact of the sun’s rays, as it reflects UV light upward from the ground. Always slather on plenty of sunscreen before you hit the slopes, and don’t forget to reapply throughout the day.

Become overly confident.

After moving down the bunny hill a few times, you might feel ready to take on a larger, more challenging slope. However, don’t forget that skiing has some inherent risks, and becoming overconfident too prematurely could jeopardize your safety. Only ski in areas where you feel comfortable. If you think you’re truly ready to graduate from the bunny hill, seek the objective opinion of your ski instructor or another veteran skier before you start trudging up the mountain. Also, don’t forget to have fun!
