When gutters are working properly, they collect rain from the roof and direct it to downspouts for safe disposal away from your property. If the channels are sagging, punctured, or corroded, however, it becomes difficult for them to filter runoff away from the house. If you don’t see any noticeable equipment damage, below are a few additional signs to look out for that indicate you need new gutters.

Do My Gutters Need to Be Replaced?

1. Flooded Basement

When rain cascades down the sides of the house, it settles at the foundation. Standing water can corrode the concrete and seep inside the structure. If you experience basement flooding during rainstorms, damaged gutters could be to blame. The damp conditions are ideal for mold and mildew growth, which could make your family sick and ruin your belongings as well.

2. Peeling Exterior House Paint

New-Braunfels-Texas-guttersWhen it rains, water seeps through cracks, gaps, and holes in the gutters and trickles down the sides of the house. The moisture can cause exterior paint to peel, so look for flaking lacquer on the sides of the house. Moisture buildup can also rot wood and warp vinyl siding.

3. Eroded Soil

Water that settles at the foundation can also flow into the yard. The liquid can wash away the top layer of dirt, causing severe soil erosion. Unfortunately, plants need nutrients in the top layer of soil to survive. If you notice that the dirt appears less dense and plants are dying, replacing the gutters could save your landscape.
