High-speed winds and heavy rainfall from seasonal storms can wreak havoc on your home’s exterior. If your gutters are dismantled during a storm or become clogged with debris, they can’t channel rain runoff away from your property. Climbing on a ladder or walking on the roof to inspect the drainage system can be dangerous, which is why you should call a professional for assistance. While waiting for help to arrive, you can take the following steps to safely check the condition of your gutters after a storm.

How to Check Gutters for Damage Following a Storm

Look for Fasteners on the Ground

Although a gutter repair technician will provide an up-close inspection to determine whether fixtures are secure, you can also tell if they need to be reinforced by looking at the ground. Any nails or metal fasteners along the house perimeter could belong to the gutter system. If the channels seem to sag or pull away from the house in certain areas, they might need new fasteners.

Check Siding for Damage

New-Braunfels-Texas-guttersIf the channels have pulled away from the house, rainwater will fall through the gaps and trickle down the surfaces. Inspect the exterior walls of the house after a storm, as it could alert you to gutter problems. The moisture can damage siding, so look for peeling paint and puckered planks.

Look for Leaks Inside the House

If gutters are packed with leaves, twigs, and mud after a storm, the blockage can exacerbate roof issues. Because runoff can’t drain properly, water will settle on the roof and saturate materials. The liquid can seep through vulnerable areas and cause staining and leaks on interior walls and ceilings. If you spot water damage inside the house, broken or clogged gutters could be part of the problem.
