Those who work at major music venues know better than anyone just how bright concert lighting can be. Even if you’ve never been diagnosed with light sensitivity or another condition that contributes to sensory overload, the spotlights and pyrotechnics can still strain your eyes. Here are a few tips for preventing issues during long shows.

How to Prevent Concert Lighting Sensitivity

1. Ensure You’re Well Rested

It’s always wise to get plenty of sleep before going to a show, especially when you anticipate pyrotechnics or similar light features. If you try to attend a concert while fatigued, you’re going to be a lot more vulnerable to eye strain throughout the evening. Eating a balanced meal and staying hydrated will also prevent headaches and other symptoms of sensory overload.

2. Keep a Pair of Sunglasses Handy

If you’re concerned about losing or breaking your sunglasses, buy a few cheap pairs from an online retailer, and slip one in your pocket before attending a show.

3. Focus on Something Else

If you start to feel dizzy, step away from the stage. If that’s not possible, close your eyes for a few moments. Turn around and face a portion of the venue that doesn’t contain bright lights. By diverting your attention from the lights until the sensation has passed, you may be able to avoid sensory overload.
