Without a formwork structure, there’d be no way to hold freshly poured concrete in place as it dries. From project scope to construction costs, there are several factors paving contractors consider when deciding what material to use for the molds. To be more informed when discussing your concrete needs with a professional, below is a brief introduction to a few formwork options.

What Formwork Could Be Used for Your Project?

Wooden Forms Are the Most Common Option

When the height of the concrete is fewer than six inches after it’s poured, paving contractors typically use wooden barriers to contain it. Often made of timber or plywood, the boards are cut and then fastened together with nails or screws to create the mold shape. Wood can warp and swell, which is why it’s often used for driveway paving and other projects that can be completed quickly.

Metal Forms Are Fabricated to Specific Shapes

Unlike wood forms, steel barriers are moisture-resistant. This means they won’t change shape and alter the mold as wet concrete cures. Fabricated to the desired shape, and bolted or clamped together, the thin steel plates can be reused. This helps reduce construction costs and time on medium- to large-scale projects. Aluminum forms are lightweight and can also be cut to a designer’s specifications, which also expedites the process of building walls, floors, and beams.

Insulated Concrete Forms Are Permanent Building Components

The hollow blocks are made of polyurethane foam or other thermal insulation materials. The blocks are stacked and locked together; then, concrete is poured on top. It fills the cavities to create a solid structure.

Concrete Wall Forms Are Used for Large-Scale Projects

When contractors need to create massive walls, foundations, and piers for building construction, some molds could buckle under the weight. Concrete wall forms are often used for these types of projects. Engineered wood with steel framing or forms made entirely of steel are sturdy enough to hold the large volume of concrete in place.

Plastic Forms Are Used for House Assembly

When contractors need to build houses quickly, they might use plastic formwork. The individual pieces are connected together to create wall panels. Window and door frames, reinforcement bars, and other components of the infrastructure are then secured to the panel. A second layer of plastic is then placed over the infrastructure. Concrete is poured between the panels.
