When you go to a concert, you probably don’t think about the equipment running the show behind the performers. However, when it comes time to put on your own performance, the amount of gear involved can be overwhelming. Plenty of venues provide backline equipment for talent, but what does that include?

What Is Backline?

Backline refers to the audio gear used to amplify sound onstage, such as PA systems or guitar amplifiers. In some cases, this term is used to reference other equipment, including instruments and accessories, from microphone stands to drum kits. If a venue tells the talent that it will provide the backline, that means the band doesn’t have to bring their amplifiers and microphones—the venue will have everything onstage for the act to use. In this case, bands will still be required to bring personal equipment such as their guitars or wind instruments.

How Does It Enhance the Concert?

The largest benefit of having the venue supply the backline is the ability to shorten the time in between sets. If the headliner doesn’t have to wait for the opener to remove all their gear, and then set up all of their own, the crowd won’t have to wait as long in between sets. The sound engineer working at the venue will only have to get to know one set of backline equipment—not adjust the sound system to each band’s amps, drums, and other gear.

Should I Rent or Purchase This Equipment?

backlineIf you run a venue that will continue to put on performances in the coming months or even years, buying backline equipment would suit you best. While the cost maybe hefty upfront, you’ll get to know your own set of gear, learn its strengths and weaknesses, and pull off weeks of consistently entertaining shows.

However, if you’re just putting on a handful of performances, or throwing a one-time event, renting is much more budget-friendly. In this case, you can benefit from working with a company that provides high-quality and up-to-date backline for the talent, without having to worry about maintenance needs or selling the equipment down the line.
