With spring blooming in Ohio, now is the time to prepare for opening your pool. Before it’s ready to host family and guests, you’ll likely need to purchase pool and garden supplies to ensure swim-safe water and a beautiful backyard area. Below are some helpful tips to follow to make pool preparation quick and easy.

4 Tips for Opening Your Pool

1. Pay Attention to the Cover

Before moving forward with any pool preparation, you must first hose off your pool cover to clear any dead leaves and other debris that may have accumulated over the winter. For serious stains or standing water, you may also need to scrub it with a bristled brush or use a wet-dry vacuum to dry excess moisture. Handling cleaning when the pool cover is still stretched across your pool makes the process more efficient and keeps debris from getting into the pool basin once it’s uncovered.

2. Reverse Winterization

If your pool was winterized, you’ll need to reverse those steps to open it once more. Make your way around the pool, removing return plugs and replacing the fittings. After that, reinstall the pool pump and filter plugs.

3. Fill Your Pool & Prime the Pump

While it’s running, make sure it is circulating water, and inspect the filter pressure on the gauge. If they are not operating properly, tighten all pump connections to ensure you don’t have a suction leak.

4. Balance Pool Water

A balanced pool is critical for maintained health and safety of anyone who uses it. Throughout the season, you can use at-home test strips to maintain balance. Test strips test chlorine, stabilizer, PH, & total alkalinity.
