While you can pick and choose features such as diving boards and slides for your new swimming pool, there is one element you cannot forgo: a fence. Pool fences are legally required nationwide to protect children and pets, with regulations varying by state. If you live in New York and are considering installing a pool in your backyard, here is what you should know.

New York Requirements & Benefits of Pool Fences

Uniform Code

pool fenceAccording to the New York State’s Uniform Code for private pools, every swimming pool should be completely surrounded by a fence that’s at least 4 feet high and completely obstructs access to the water. This also means the gap between the bottom of the fence and the ground must be less than 2 inches, while any slat openings must not exceed 4 inches in diameter. For extra safety, the fence should include self-closing gates with child-proof locks that open outwards for efficient pedestrian use, and must remain closed when the pool is not in use.

Your NY county may even require a signed contract from a fencing company before pool construction can begin. Temporary enclosures may be used during the pool’s construction, but permanent fencing has to be completed 90 days after the permit issue date.

Fencing Advantages

In addition to protecting your family, pets, and neighbors, pool fences can give a custom look to your backyard. Aluminum fences in wrought-iron style can make your yard look upscale, while wooden fences give you total privacy to take to the waters. There are many styles and materials to choose from, so speak to a fencing contractor to decide what works best for you.
