Barbecuing is a popular pastime during warm weather, with many homeowners using gas grills throughout spring and summer. Even if the equipment was left under a vinyl cover during winter, it will still need cleaning and maintenance before it’s ready to use. Taking the below steps will prevent safety hazards, help avoid appliance malfunctions, and ensure food is cooked to perfection.

How to Get Gas Grills Ready for Cookout Season

1. Remove Grime on Components

For even cooking and to prevent food from sticking, remove soot, grease residue, dirt, and additional grime on grates with a scrub brush. After removing the panel, spray it with a water and vinegar solution to dissolve the gunk or put it in a bucket of soap and water. While the grate is soaking, wipe the outside of the grill, inside lid, grease tray, and additional elements. This might require disassembling the grill. For proper ventilation, debris should be cleared from the air vents. If the gas grill was left outside, you might also need to remove insects living in tubes and crevices.

2. Inspect Parts for Damage

Gas can also escape through cracks in hoses and tubes, so check the channels, valves, and regulators for damage. If you can’t tell, you can place soapy water on the parts and turn on the propane tank. If the water bubbles, gas is escaping from a broken component.

3. Call a Repair Specialist

If you notice ignition components or tubes and hoses need to be replaced, call a repair technician for assistance. They’ll make sure the new parts are installed safely and correctly. They’ll also make sure knobs and handles are secure, inspect the temperature gauge for malfunctions, and provide additional repairs to improve equipment performance. Before your first barbecue, stock up on the propane supply and replace the gas storage tank if it’s corroded.
