A dental crown, sometimes called a cap, is a procedure that covers a tooth to restore its strength, shape, and size. Same-day crowns are available, or the dentist may perform different phases of the treatment over multiple appointments. If your dentist has recommended you get a dental crown, here are some tips that can aid your recovery.

Advice for Recovering From a Dental Crown

1. Be Careful of Numbness

Whether you are receiving same-day crowns or having temporary ones placed at one appointment and permanent caps applied at a later date, your dentist will probably give you a local anesthetic for each phase of the procedure. Until the numbness wears off, be careful not to bite your tongue, lips, or the insides of your cheeks. Avoid very hot foods and beverages until all the feeling returns to your mouth, as you could accidentally burn yourself and not even realize it.

2. Expect Some Discomfort

same-day crownsAfter the anesthetic wears off, you might experience some pain and irritation around the treatment area. In most cases, an over-the-counter topical gel or pain medication such as ibuprofen will take care of this discomfort. Many patients find that using a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth provides some relief as well. A major advantage of same-day crowns is that you only have to undergo one procedure, so you don’t have to go through the discomfort twice.

3. Take Care of Your Crown

If you get a temporary crown before the permanent one is placed, keep in mind that a temporary crown is fragile, so try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth as much as possible to avoid breaking or dislodging it. When you receive a permanent crown, avoid sticky foods for 24 hours after the procedure, to give the cement time to set. After the cement has hardened and the crown is firmly in place, you should be able to eat normally and follow your usual teeth cleaning routine.
