No one wants to wake up to find that water dribbles out of the showerhead. In addition to inhibiting your ability to clean yourself, low pressure may point to a more serious plumbing issue. Fortunately, with a few tips, you can pinpoint the source of the problem and get your shower back to full strength.

Plumbing Troubleshooting Guide for Low Water Pressure

1. Malfunctioning Regulator

The pressure regulator is responsible for sending water through your plumbing at a safe and desirable PSI. Generally, it should be between 40 and 60 PSI. Anything lower than this range may not give you the force you need to clean off shampoo and soap, while higher pressure could damage your pipes. If all the plumbing fixtures in your home exhibit low pressure, a bad regulator is likely the issue.

2. Disturbed Valves

plumbingThe valves allow you to shut off the flow of water to your home when you have a leak or are having a plumbing service done. Sometimes, they can get bumped, turning them slightly out of place and thus impacting water flow. Check the valve in your meter box and at the exterior water hose faucet to ensure they’re entirely open.

3. Mineral Buildup

Mineral deposits are common in older plumbing. As water moves through the pipes, the minerals get stuck on the sides. Eventually, that buildup reduces the diameter of the pipe, impeding air flow. You will either need to clear out the plumbing or replace it altogether, depending on its condition.
