Dog kennels create a safe place for your pet to run, play, or sleep outside. However, before you start building one, you need to carefully consider different aspects of how the shelter will function to ensure your dog is comfortable.

3 Factors to Think About Before Building a Dog Kennel

1. Fencing Material

When you select materials for your dog kennel, take the daily habits of your animal into account. While wood has been traditionally used for kennels, it may not be right for dogs who tend to scratch since they could get splinters in their paws. On the other hand, vinyl fencing and chain-link fences can create a strong, safe kennel as long as they’re anchored properly.

When you plan your kennel, make sure it’s large enough to allow your dog to move comfortably inside. If you have the space, create a large kennel so they can enjoy outdoor runs. As a general rule of thumb, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals suggests making outdoor kennels either 10’x10’ or 5’x15’

3. Pet Comfort

This kennel will be your pet’s home, so think about how to make the space comfortable for them. Install a roof over at least part of the kennel to give your animal shelter from sudden rainstorms. If you are worried about wind, choose a fence with close slats.
