Fencing materials keep your dog secure on your property, but they won’t do much good if your pup keeps digging underneath them. Fortunately, you can take steps to curb this behavior. Use any of the strategies below to ensure your dog is safe in your yard.

How to Prevent Dogs From Digging Under Fencing Materials

Discourage the Behavior

Many dogs start trying to dig under a fence because they see something interesting on the other side. A chain link fence lets them observe the world around them, which may be causing them to dig. You can remove the allure of escape by blocking their view. Plant some hedges along the fence or put panels inside the chain link.

Create Additional Barriers

Fencing materials or other barriers in tfencing materialshe ground will get in the way when your dog starts to dig, so they’ll give up. You can install chicken wire or rocks. For chicken wire, overlap it on the bottom of the fence, so about a foot of it hangs below the bottom of the fence. You can then either dig a trench and insert it vertically into the ground, or lay it horizontally underneath the soil.

If you don’t want to attach chicken wire, you can place large rocks along the base of the fence instead. Beautiful boulders can be a nice addition to the landscaping and keep your dog far back enough from the fence that they cannot dig. Just make sure the rocks are heavy enough that your dog can’t move them. Also, dig a small indentation into the soil, so they’ll be secure in their spot.
