Tree trimming is useful for maintaining curb appeal and preventing damage to nearby structures. However, attempting to complete this task on your own has the potential to cause more harm than good. Here are the top three mistakes that can happen when you don’t call a professional for routine tree maintenance.

3 Common DIY Tree Trimming Mistakes

1. Cutting Off the Top

Some may think that cutting the top off the tree is the best way to reduce its height. While removing the top does make the tree visibly shorter, it also increases sucker growth. These tiny shoots aren’t as structurally sound as normal branches and could eventually jeopardize the stability of the tree. Trimming back larger branches and leaving the original trunk intact is a better method to follow.

2. Removing Thick Branches

They’re also open invitations to pests who are looking to take up residence before the tree can defend itself. Stick to only cutting branches no larger than two to three inches in diameter.

3. Taking Away Too Much

Tree trimming helps thin out overgrown branches to allow lower and inside ones more access to sun and airflow. But taking away too much could weaken the tree’s structure, especially during a storm. Limit cuts to approximately 20% of the live growth to preserve the tree’s strength and prevent accidental damage.
