With the weather warming up, now is the perfect time to handle some annual plumbing maintenance. This small investment of time and money will ensure your plumbing systems are in top condition for the changing seasons.

Spring Prep Checklist for Home Plumbing

1. Test the Sump Pump

Basement floods are most common during the spring, as the ground is saturated with water. Melting snow and heavy spring rainstorms put your basement at risk. Have your sump pump tested to check that the pump kicks on when water fills the sump basin to a certain level. You should also check that there is a backup power supply, such as a battery or generator, so your pump will work during a power outage.

2. Drain & Check the Water Heater

plumbingYour water heater has had a busy season in the cold weather, and sediment can build up inside the tank. Have a technician drain your water heater completely before allowing it to fill up again, which will flush out the past year’s sediment. Check that the unit’s temperature is set no higher than 120 degrees, as any higher wastes energy and puts family members at risk of getting scalded. Lastly, look for any signs of corrosion and puddles around the tank.

3. Check for Leaks

Leaks in your home can waste a lot of water, drive up your monthly bills, promote mold growth, and cause extensive water damage in the hidden areas of your home. To determine if you have a leak, turn off your home’s main shutoff valve. Check your meter, then check again in 30 minutes. If the meter has moved, you’ll need to call a plumbing service to locate and repair your leaks.
