When people think of a junkyard, they typically picture old cars sitting in a field. While salvage yards are wonderful solutions for disposing of your aging or malfunctioning vehicle, there are many other items you can take there as well. Clear out some space in your home and yard by taking each of the items below to your metal recycling professionals.

What You Can Take to the Junkyard

1. Air Conditioners

Your old air conditioning unit is the perfect candidate for the scrap yard. You will need to have a licensed HVAC specialist prepare the unit, however, or the yard won’t accept it and you may be fined by the Environmental Protection Agency. Have your professional remove all the freon refrigerant and other fluids or oils in the unit first.

2. Copper Plumbing

junkyardCopper pipes were used in bathrooms and kitchens in the 1930s and became much more popular in new construction after the 1960s. If you’re updating your plumbing with cross-linked polyethylene flexible tubing, take the removed copper lines to the metal salvage yard. You’ll receive a fair price that will help offset the cost of your upgrade. If you’re unsure what your pipes are made of, ask your plumber. Note that while many people associate copper pipes with a shiny, reddish color, old fixtures may have turned dark brown or green due to oxidation over time.

3. Lawn Mower

Your lawn mower has some valuable aluminum and steel parts that can be recycled or reused. You may be able to get more for it if you prepare the equipment first. Remove all the oil from the reservoir, and take the used oil to a mechanic, who can safely dispose of it.
