Dry, winter air can affect your skin, dehydrating it and leading to cracking and discomfort. Long-term exposure may lead to damage and signs of aging, which is why it’s important to combat it. Luckily, it only requires a few lifestyle changes and a trip to the pharmacy. Sticking to the do’s and don'ts below will ensure you maintain your complexion and keep your skin healthy during the colder months.

Do:

Use sunscreen.

Many people only associate sunscreen with summer and spring; however, it’s just as important in winter. The sun will gradually dehydrate your skin, especially when reflecting off of snow and coupled with dry, winter wind. Apply an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen any time you go outside to combat these effects. If you have sensitive skin, speak with pharmacy staff about prescription products. Doing this will also help prevent skin cancer and burning.

Use a humidifier.

pharmacyDry skin doesn’t come only from outdoor exposure. If you live in a dry region that dries out your home, invest in a humidifier. You can find many personal portable products at your local pharmacy. Setting it to 60% humidity should be plenty to keep your skin hydrated. For long-term service, considering installing a whole-home humidifier system.

Don’t:

Take hot showers.

A piping hot shower feels perfect in winter, and while it keeps you warm, it also damages your skin. Gradually, it will dry your skin and, in the worst cases, scald it. Instead of a hot shower, stick with warm water, and don’t stay in longer than 10 minutes. This will prevent dryness and damage. Remember to dry off with a smooth towel and to pat your skin so you don’t create creases.

Use the wrong soap.

Cold weather introduces flu season, which means you’ll be washing your hands a lot. This is crucial for fending off bacteria; however, fragrant and alcohol-heavy soaps can be problematic. Avoid anything that will dry out your skin. Instead, look for non-scented moisturizing alternatives at the pharmacy, both for your hands and in the shower. These will keep you clean and hydrate your skin.
