Braces are a fantastic way to straighten crooked or crowded teeth, producing a beautiful smile for life. However, orthodontics require some special care as the brackets and wires can make it more difficult to remove bacteria and eliminate plaque effectively. One effect of ineffective cleaning is white spot lesions or WSLs, which are chalky-looking white spots on the teeth that occur as a result of acid-producing bacteria buildup.

How to Prevent WSLs With Braces

1. Brush Regularly

A strong oral hygiene routine is crucial to keep your smile bright and healthy with or without braces. But when you have this hardware, it’s particularly important to give your teeth extra attention. You may want to use an interproximal brush for a more effective clean. Brush twice a day, preferably after meals, for two minutes each time. This will remove food particles and bacteria which can result in decalcification and plaque buildup.

2. Floss

bracesFlossing at least once a day is also essential with or without braces—but it may be more challenging with gear. If you struggle to floss with regular floss, consider using a floss threader or water flosser, which uses pressurized water to remove plaque and particles from between the teeth.

3. Use Mouthwash

Mouthwash is no substitute for brushing and flossing. However, it can be an excellent supplement to your oral hygiene routine. Use an ADA-approved mouthwash with fluoride after brushing and flossing. Rinse for 30 seconds at a time. You can also use mouthwash in between brushing throughout the day to clean your mouth and keep breath fresh.

4. Avoid Sugary, Acidic Foods

Diet has a significant impact on your overall health, including your teeth and gums. The harmful bacteria that produces WSLs feeds on sugars and acids. Cutting down on these types of foods can help reduce bacteria growth and the occurrence of WSLs. When you do drink sugary or acidic beverages such as soda or fruit juice, use a straw to minimize contact with the teeth. Also, brush your teeth after consuming such foods, or rinse with mouthwash.
