As a boat owner, the feeling of climbing aboard and driving into the waves is hard to beat. Therefore, it’s easy to feel defeated when your watercraft won’t start. If you’ve stepped into a vessel that just won’t launch, the problem could be anything from the alternator to the battery. Use the following guide to troubleshoot the issue so you can get back to enjoying the open water.

What to Do When Your Boat Won’t Start

1. Check the Battery

Like a car that needs a jumpstart, a dead battery will immediately keep your boat from making waves. To check on this part of the vessel, look to see if the electrolyte levels within the battery reach the plastic liner inside the holes. If there’s a switch on the battery, make sure it’s set to "on" or "both." Finally, check that the top of the battery, as well as the cables and connections nearby, are dry and clean.

2. Inspect the Wiring

The fuses should also have clean, tightly secured contacts. If there is cracked or damaged insulation in the bilge and engine compartment, you may need to have it repaired before heading out on the water.

3. Alternator & Starter

Next, turn your attention to your boat’s alternator and starter. The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system, while the starter turns the engine.  If the alternator drive belt is loose, you may need to replace it to get these components to function properly.
