Human eyes are a complex and fascinating part of the body. Whether you wear glasses to see clearly or your optometrist determined you have 20/20 vision at your last eye exam, understanding the intricacies and beauty of these organs can help you better appreciate the role they play in everyday life. With this in mind, here are a few fun facts about eyes to think about.

Eye Facts You May Not Know

1. Eye Color is Genetic

One’s eye color is a result of the amount of melanin or pigment in your eye. While eye color is genetic, it’s not a result of one specific gene. It’s determined by several genes, so while it’s likely for two parents with blue eyes to have a child with blue eyes, for example, this is not always the case. One’s grandparents and other relatives expanding back several generations can play a role in your eye color.

2. 8% of Men are Color Blind

GlassesStudies have found that roughly 8% of men with Northern European ancestry have some degree of red-green color blindness. Men are far more likely to be color blind, as the genetic marker responsible for this condition is linked to the X chromosome.

3. Most Humans Blink 15-20 Times a Minute

Did you know on average every human being blinks 15-20 times a minute? That means approximately 10% of your waking life is spent blinking. In addition to helping maintain lubrication and eye health, many people blink more than physiologically required as a way to assert focus or gather their thoughts.

4. 14 Million Americans Wear Glasses

Many individuals, particularly adolescents, can be apprehensive about having to wear glasses or contact lenses. To relieve nerves or embarrassment, optometrists often remind younger patients that nearly 14 million Americans require glasses or some form of corrective eyewear or surgery to see clearly. It’s a common need and nothing to be alarmed about.
