Tooth sensitivity from foods or drinks is a well-known issue; however, cold temperatures in winter can also cause sensitivity issues. In dentistry, winter-related sensitivity is a condition that can be remedied with a number of treatments—such as putting in a crown—and learning more about the causes and potential fixes will prepare you for your next dentist appointment. Here’s what you need to know about sensitivity issues in the winter.

Why It Happens

Tooth sensitivity occurs when the sensitive inner layers of your teeth are exposed to outside irritants, such as winter’s cold temperatures. Often, this is a result of enamel loss, which occurs naturally from eating acidic foods and normal day-to-day abrasion. Dental damage such as cavities, chips, and fractures can also expose deep tissue. Additionally, disease can cause the gums to recede, destroying the tissue and enamel and exposing the lower part of your teeth.

In the winter, your teeth shrink and expand with changing temperatures, and going back and forth from freezing winds to heated buildings forms microfractures in your enamel. While they may not be visible, they’re exposing small amounts of your tooth’s dentin, causing sensitivity.

How to Stop It

If a cavity, chip, or fracture is the cause of the sensitivity, your dentist may recommend a crown to protect them from exposure to irritants. For tiny microfractures, a dentist will apply veneers to your teeth, which are thin slips of porcelain that protect the outer, front surface of your teeth. A dental sealant could also be an option for you or your child, as the procedure is quick and painless and the material is designed to prevent cavities and exposed tissue.
