Whether putting on a concert or leading a presentation, using wireless mics on stage will help your voice travel to every corner of the room. As your natural voice is amplified, it might take a minute to adjust to the change. Proper preparation, including the steps here, will eliminate distortions and feedback, ensuring the sound remains clear as you speak.

3 Pointers for Using Wireless Mics

1. Become Familiar With Equipment & Check the Sound

You might have to adjust wireless mic settings while speaking, so look at equipment thoroughly before the event. Beyond the on and off switches, you should also know the location of mute and standby buttons. Once you feel comfortable with equipment, do a practice run of your speech from various areas in the room. Doing so will let the sound technician know whether there are feedback issues and additional problems that need to be fixed to improve audio quality.

2. Practice Placement

wireless-micsFrom whistling to ruffling noises, how you speak into the mic could be to blame for distracting distortions. When holding the device, make sure it remains several inches away from your face. The ball should be just below the mouth. This will ensure air travels over the windscreen as you speak, preventing static noises. When secured on a podium, also speak over the mic from approximately a foot away. If a smaller mouthpiece is clipped to your clothes, speak as you would if it weren’t there. Avoid making sharp head movements, as they could dislodge the device, causing an unpleasant rattle.

3. Be Mindful of What You Wear

You want to look your best when speaking in front of a crowd, but put serious thought into what you wear on stage. When moving, bangles, earrings, and rings could knock against the microphone speaker, causing pops, cracks, and other ear-piercing noises. To prevent this, limit the amount of jewelry you wear. So a clipped mic remains in place, wear a jacket or blouse with a lapel. The battery should be clipped to a belt or waistband so you don’t have to hold it.
