Outside bets are not based on 0 to 36 and instead involve putting money down on the numbers and markers on the outer portion of the table. Because the chance of winning is higher, the payout is lower. For example, betting on red or black pays 1 to 1, as does betting on all even or all odd numbers. Betting on all 12 numbers in a column pays 2 to 1. 

The 0 on the wheel gives the house a 2.7% advantage, while the 00 gives it a 5.26% advantage over players. The French wheel has La Partage and En Prison rules in place to prevent players from losing all money on outside even bets or when the ball lands on zero. 

Table Maximum & Minimum Bets Are Clearly Set

The stakes are set on each table, so keep this in mind before placing a bet. The inside and outside bet minimums could be the same, while there is often a difference in the maximum amount. The maximum for outside bets is often higher than inside bets because there is a lower payoff. Although the odds remain the same, you can still look at the board of previous numbers the ball has landed on for insight.
