At this time of year, many of us make New Year’s resolutions. Despite our good intentions, only about 10% of us actually follow through and accomplish the goals we set with our New Year’s resolutions.

Why Are New Year’s Resolutions So Hard to Keep?

Most of the time we don’t put a lot of thought into how we will attempt to keep our New Year’s resolutions, and we don’t recognize the importance of planning, accountability, anticipating obstacles, etc. To assist with the process of pursuing and reaching goals - and thereby successfully keeping those New Year’s resolutions - it can be very helpful to work with a life coach.

How Can a Life Coach Help Me with My Goals?

To begin with, the coach will work with you to clarify your goals, anticipate the obstacles you might encounter, and identify some strategies that can help you achieve your goals. To gather the information needed for a good plan, your coach will ask you thought-provoking questions and listen carefully to your answers. Your coach may also contribute some ideas you haven’t considered, and the two of you will work together to develop an individualized action plan for achieving your goals. Your coach will then support and guide you as you work toward your goals, inspiring and motivating you to stay on track, and celebrating your efforts and achievements.

How is Life Coaching Different from Psychotherapy?

Although there are some similarities between life coaching and psychotherapy, there are many important differences as well. Life coaching is intended for people who are not experiencing significant emotional distress, and the focus is on pursuing and achieving goals. Psychotherapy, on the other hand, is intended for people who are experiencing psychological difficulties, and the focus is on addressing emotional and/or behavioral problems. In addition, while psychotherapy can sometimes involve delving into the client’s past, life coaching is firmly focused on the present and the future. A further difference is that there’s less emphasis on accountability and goal pursuit in psychotherapy than in life coaching.

What Types of Goals Can Be Pursued in Coaching?

A wide range of goals can be pursued in life coaching. Whether you’re looking to create a more fulfilling life, establish a healthier lifestyle, boost your self-confidence, become more organized, pursue more education, advance in your career, pursue entrepreneurial goals, redesign your life during major life transitions, creatively manage serious life challenges, make your relationships more fulfilling, cultivate your creativity, improve your life balance or better manage your stress, life coaching can be of great assistance. When you partner with a life coach who works with the types of issues you want to address, life coaching can powerfully enhance your ability to create the life you want.
