Finding the right glasses requires a visit to your local eye care center to try on a variety of frames. Once you’ve found your ideal pair, maintenance is key to ensure you get the most out of your investment and you always have access to corrective eyewear. If you’re getting your first pair, here are a few eye doctor-approved do’s and don’ts to embrace.

Do:

Clean your glasses regularly.

One of the most important parts of eye care is ensuring your lenses are clean. This way, you’ll see clearly and reduce the likelihood of contracting an eye disease or infection. When ordering your glasses from your eye care center, ask if they carry cleaning products. Odds are they will have microfiber cloth and special lens cleaning kits available for purchase so you can sanitize and wipe your glasses down frequently.

Keep your eyeglasses in a protective case.

Eye CareWhen you aren’t using your glasses, it’s important to keep them safe and in a contained area so that dust and other airborne debris cannot penetrate the lenses. With this in mind, invest in a hard case. This way, your eyeglasses will be protected when they aren’t in use, and you won’t have to worry about your frames getting bent or smashed when stored in your pocket or bag.

Don’t:

Use household window cleaner on your glasses.

While it may be tempting to clean smudged lenses with a readily available window or all-purpose cleaner, the harsh chemicals present in these products can wear down your frame’s protective coating and leave a residue that’s harmful to your vision. If you’re out of lens cleaning solution, use warm water and mild hand soap instead. Always dry your glasses with a microfiber cloth to prevent scratching.

Wear incorrect prescription lenses.

If you forget your glasses, it may be tempting to borrow from a friend or family member with similar eyesight. Unfortunately, wearing the wrong prescription can cause headaches and vision issues. Consider having a backup pair of glasses in case you forget a pair or you crack your lenses and need a temporary solution until you can visit your eye care center.
