For many families, the holidays wouldn’t be complete without a model train centerpiece in the family room. Whether your train winds through the presents under the tree or sits on its own dedicated display, a model set can be the tradition that makes the holiday your own. If you’re setting up a model train this year, below are a few tips for giving it some holiday spirit.

How to Decorate Your Model Train Set for the Holidays

1. Elevate the Tracks

Placing your trains on floor level can give your holiday display a whimsical flair, but it also exposes the tiny wheels and motors to dust, pet dander, and dirt. To keep your trains running efficiently for years to come, use tracks with an attached roadbed or build your own riser out of plywood.

2. Keep Snow Off the Tracks

3. Glue Down the Scenery

Even if you use an artificial tree, you’ll probably have to vacuum and move things around throughout the season. Gluing down the scenery will keep it out of the vacuum and keep your set looking festive all season long.

4. Incorporate Your Own Family

Family is the most important part of the holidays, so make yours an integral part of the model train set. For instance, you can put figures representing your loved ones on a platform, or even build a small model of your family home. As the years go by, you can add to or modify this aspect of your model train set as your family grows and changes.
