Stage fright is common among youngsters taking to the stage for their first dance performance. Not only will they be tasked with showing everything that they’ve learned in dance class, but they’ll also need to do so in front of an audience. While this can be an intimidating task for your little one, there are several ways you can help your child feel more confident before they walk on stage.

A Guide to Helping Kids Avoid Stage Fright Before a Performance

1. Encourage Them to Practice

Sometimes the fear of making a mistake is the most profound emotion a child feels before taking the stage. Whether your little one is dancing solo or in a group setting, it’s important that they spend plenty of time practicing their dance class moves until they feel confident. That type of preparation is the key to feeling confident before the performance and can help alleviate many of those last-minute nerves that tend to overwhelm kids. Ask your child’s instructor for help and advice if your child needs extra assurances before performing.

2. Teach Them Relaxation Methods

Anxiety and nerves can deter your child from participating in dance class. There are many techniques children can employ to minimize the severity of these problems and make it easier to go on stage and show off their jazz and tap skills. For example, taking slow, deep breaths can help calm the mind and body. Counting to 10 can also help. Remind your kids that you’ll be there watching them during their performance to make them feel comfortable.

3. Provide Gentle Reassurance

Explain to your child that the entire purpose of a stage performance isn’t to be the best, but to always try their best and share what they’ve accomplished in dance class. Take the time to make it a special day for your child. Be sure to get to the performance venue on time so there’s no rush that causes anxiety. Provide encouragement before the show, and let them know that the main goal is simply to have fun. There’s no pressure—it’s simply an enjoyable way to share what they’re learning in front of some friendly faces.

             Having fun at the show!
