Tires can sustain a variety of damages throughout their time on the road, including punctures and slow leaks from embedded objects such as nails. While some issues such as worn-down treads call for immediate replacement, others benefit from tire repair services. Your local auto mechanic will let you know if the tire is worth saving.

How to Tell You Need Tire Repairs

1. Inflation Fixes

Underinflated tires make too much contact with the road, causing an increase in heat and friction — and premature tread wear. Overinflated tires do not make enough contact with the road, resulting in poor handling and tread wear, as well as an increased risk of blowouts. Fortunately, inflation issues can be corrected using a tire pressure gauge and air machine. However, it is still best to have a trained professional educate you on proper inflation and gauge use to avoid problems in the future.

2. Puncture Repair

tire repairPunctures from nails, glass, and other sharp road debris are repairable so long as they are in the center of the tread. Those on sidewalls cannot be repaired because the material is too thin and will not hold a plug or patch. The best puncture repairs use both plugs and patches to create effective, lasting seals. Auto mechanics apply the plug to the exterior of the tire before taking it off the rim. They cut down the plug so it is flush with the interior of the tire, then apply a circular patch over the plug. This creates a double seal that is much more secure — the plug fills the puncture and the patch secures the interior.

3. Recaps

Recaps provide the tires of semi-trucks with new tread. They are applicable to rear tires only since they do not do as much turning as front tires. This type of tire repair works only if the tires are in good condition and are not excessively bald. Recaps subsequently provide rear semi-truck tires that are starting to wear down with tread to help them last much longer.
