Unlike grass seed, sod provides residential and commercial lawns with instant greenery. It is grown and harvested at sod farms and requires little maintenance compared to establishing lawns the traditional way. Sod grass is also less susceptible to weeds, pests, and diseases. If you are considering sod for your residential or commercial lawn, here are a few popular choices.

Top 3 Sod Types for Commercial & Residential Properties

1. Bermuda

Bermuda typically features finely textured grass blends to create dense, lush, light green sod with good drought tolerance. It stands up to heavy foot traffic, making it ideal for golf courses and other sports fields. Bermuda sod hybrids also work well for large families with high-traffic backyards. Plant this fast-growing sod in sunny areas because it will shrink in the shade. Also, Bermuda grows during warm seasons only but it can be installed year round. In the winter, while it is dormant, you can take your time installing it because it does not hurt to leave it on the pallet for longer periods of time. Also, after installation the only thing you need to do to it during the winter is water it if it is not going to rain soon after installation and is dry.

2. Zoysia

sodAnother warm season option, zoysia sod thrives in full sun but will tolerate some shade only needing 3 good hours of sunlight per day, offers excellent weed, drought, heat, and cold tolerance, and holds up well against a lot of foot traffic. Zoysia makes an outstanding selection for any high-traffic areas in need of a little greenery, including golf courses and busy backyards. The deep-green, slow-growing sod also does well on roadsides and medians due to its durability and low maintenance needs. It can also be laid while dormant in the winter as the Bermuda above.

3. Saint Augustine

Saint Augustine is another warm season sod option celebrated for its drought and shade tolerance. It features a dark blue-green color, grows at a moderate rate, and works best in low-traffic areas such as front yards, side yards, and commercial building complexes where people normally stay off the grass. Saint Augustine grass is also vulnerable to chemical weed products but establishes itself quickly due to speedy root growth. It only requires about 1 hour per day sunlight. The only draw back to this grass that in Arkansas a very significant winter can kill some or all of it. Leave your last mowing in the fall high and if it is dry and we are going to get a bad cold spell water it to help protect it.
