Every year, some 1.5 million people are arrested on DUI charges. This alarming number illustrates how insidious the problem of drunk driving is, as well as the major dangers and risks such drivers present on roads across the country. But there are some surprisingly simple steps anyone can take to avoid getting behind the wheel while under the influence; below, DUI lawyer Thomas W. Smothers, Attorney at Law, in High Point, NC, discusses a few of these steps in more detail.

How to Avoid DUI Charges

1. Set Up a Designated Driver Beforehand

Most people know in advance when they're going to be drinking. If you're planning a night out at the bar or a trip to the club, these are pretty strong indicators that alcohol will be consumed. Take the time to set up a designated driver beforehand, and get in the habit of doing this every time you go out drinking. Take turns among your group of friends, so everyone shares the responsibility. Some cities even have designated driver services where, before going out, you can arrange a driver to pick you up at an appointed time later on.

2. Use a Ride-Share Service

DUI chargesRide-share apps, like Lyft® and Uber®, make it easier than ever to get a ride home after one too many drinks. All it takes is a couple of taps on the app, and a car will be at your location in a matter of minutes. It's often much cheaper than a traditional cab, too. Be mindful of how much you're drinking, and when your limit has been reached, make the choice to contact a ride-share service. You are not only avoiding DUI charges, but you could be saving a life.

3. Install an Ignition Interlock Device

The same ignition interlock devices installed on cars after DUI charges are available for anyone to purchase and install. While this might seem like an extreme option, it makes a lot of sense. If you're aware that you have poor judgment and make bad decisions when drinking, an interlock ignition device is a smart move. It's easy enough to operate; just blow into a testing apparatus that gauges your blood alcohol content every time you get behind the wheel. Based on the results, the ignition will either unlock and allow you to start it or stay locked and force you to find a wiser alternative to driving.
