If you’re like most people, perhaps you completed your first major move with help from friends or family. While that might suffice for some items, however, it’s best to turn to professional movers for a large amount of furniture and possessions, especially fragile pieces. They’re trained to handle items both quickly and carefully, while everything is insured up to a certain amount in case of mishaps. If you’ve never hired movers before, here’s what you need to know.

Do:

Get Rid of Unwanted Items Prior to the Move.

It would be a waste of time and effort to have your movers carry items you don’t want. To ensure they only move what you want to keep, donate, sell, or dispose of any unwanted items well before your move.

Label Fragile Items.

Separate fragile items from everything else. Clearly label the top and sides of each box containing fragile items with the word “fragile.” Write a clear note as to which side should always be up (e.g. “This side up” or “Top”).

Ensure Movers Have Easy Access to Your Property.

moversClear space for your movers to park so that their vehicle has ample clearance and a short path to your home’s entrance, without violating any parking rules; move your own vehicle if necessary. This will ensure a fast move with few complications.

Don’t:

Leave Items in Your Furniture.

Empty all of your furniture to make it easier to move. In case of dressers or anything else with drawers, tape them shut so they don’t fly open while being handled. Alternatively, you can remove the drawers without necessarily emptying them; cover the tops, and your movers can treat them like long boxes.

Micromanage.

Professional movers do not need much direction, especially when it comes to how to carry or load items. Take a step back while they’re doing their job, and you’ll get the most efficient use of your time.

Pack During Moving Day.

Avoid waiting until the last minute when it comes to packing and aim to have everything finished well before your movers arrive. The situation will be far less chaotic that way, and your movers won’t end up having to wait on you.
