Your child’s teachers will help them achieve academic success, but parents play a vital role in supporting a student’s educational accomplishments—both at school and during after school care and activities. In fact, parental engagement is correlated with success for families from all backgrounds and income levels.

Why Does Parent Involvement Make a Difference?

When parents are involved, students behave and earn better grades in school; this effect is even greater when two parents are involved, regardless of whether or not the parents live in the same home. Imagine the benefit to your child if their school could spend an additional $1,000 per student; parental involvement can achieve the same results.

How Can Parents Get Involved?

after school careAt home, ask your child about their day, even when they seem reluctant to share. Set aside time to talk about school, and be available to help with homework, even if they don’t need it. Communicate actively with your student’s teacher, too. Email when you have questions or check in from time to time to ask if there’s anything you can do to support your child’s learning.

Parents can volunteer to help out in the classroom during the school day, supporting academic or recreational activities. For those who work during the day, most schools have parent-teacher organizations that meet in the evenings. If your child participates in after school care or activities, you don’t have to become a coach to get involved. You can bring snacks and be supportive during activities or games where parents are welcome.
