Receiving a package from a delivery service—only to find some or all of its contents in pieces—is never pleasant, especially if the contents are gifts or fragile antiques. If your last few box-packing endeavors have not gone as planned, it’s time to rethink your strategy. There are plenty of ways you can ensure the package reaches its destination intact.

How to Properly Pack Boxes

1. Remove or Cover Old Shipping Labels

Check for old shipping and hazardous material labels if you are reusing a box instead of buying one new. Remove or cover the labels and make certain the box is otherwise in good condition; it should be sturdy with undamaged flaps and no weak areas.

2. Wrap Everything Separately

Wrap each item separately in packaging material. This prevents the items from rubbing together and getting damaged. It also keeps them from bouncing around the box and potentially breaking apart.

3. Use an Extra Box for Fragile Items

Delivery service personnel regularly recommend filling the bottom of a larger box with packing peanuts and then placing a smaller box inside it. Add more peanuts to prevent the smaller box from moving inside. Remember to wrap fragile items individually before placing them in the smaller box.

4. Don’t Overpack

Avoid overpacking, especially if the items you are shipping cannot break, such as plush toys. As important as it is to pad everything, too many packing materials increase the box’s weight and its shipping price.

5. Utilize the H-Taping Method

Tape your box using the H method, a style frequently utilized by delivery services and moving companies. Fold the box flaps in and use a packing tape dispenser to seal the box where the flaps meet. Use enough tape, so it folds down over either edge of the box for additional support. Tape both ends of the box; the result should be an “H” shape.
