Stretching is a valuable component of dance that increases flexibility and helps prevent injuries. Dancers of all ages should include warm-up stretches as part of their routine before dance class. Whether your little one is just beginning or has been participating for several months, have them perform the following stretches to improve their technique.

Stretches to Prepare for Dance Class

1. Quadricep Stretch

This group of muscles is located on the front of the thighs. First, position yourself face down on the floor with your arms supporting the forehead. Straighten your legs and bend the left one up. Reach behind to grab the foot with your left hand and gently pull it up toward the waist. Hold for approximately 10 seconds, then repeat with the right leg and arm.

2. Calf Stretch

These muscles are found behind the shin and run from the ankle to the back of knee. Place your right foot a small distance in front of the left. Bend your right knee slightly forward while keeping the left foot straight and heel on the floor. Hold for 10 seconds, then repeat with the other leg.

3. Shoulders & Arms

Dance is just as much about the arms and shoulders as it is about the legs. The best way to warm up these muscles is with a twofold stretch. First, interlock the fingers and turn the wrists away from the chest. Raise arms up and hold for approximately 10 seconds. Lower the arms, then position your left hand behind your head. Take the left elbow with your right hand and press it to reach down your back as far as comfortably possible. Hold for 10 seconds, then repeat with the right arm.
