Sod is an excellent way to ensure you have a lush, beautiful lawn quickly. There’s no need to wait for it to grow—all you have to do is maintain it. For the best results after the installation, there are a few steps you should take immediately. Here is a simple guide to keep the grass thriving.

Water It Properly

The key to beautiful sod is watering it properly. For the first 14 days after the installation, hose it down until the ground feels soft and spongy when you step on it. Although it might seem like overkill, you need to water new sod three to five terms per day. It should also always be kept in about four to six inches of liquid. Start tapering this off by the third week—reduce the watering sessions to one to three times per day, gradually waiting longer periods between each one.

Roll & Mow It

sodAfter about a month, the sod will be dry enough to handle a lawn roller. Go over each inch of the grass carefully with this tool. This will ensure the sod is completely flush with the soil and will grow properly. Additionally, mow the lawn when it’s dry enough. Sharpen the mower blades beforehand, as dull ones will shred the grass and may pull it up before the roots are firmly in the soil. Also, don’t cut it too short since longer grass grows better.
