Patients who wear braces or Invisalign® can look forward to a straighter smile that gives them greater confidence. The journey doesn’t end there, however. After completing treatment, it’s necessary to wear a retainer regularly to maintain those newly straightened teeth. Neglecting to wear the device can be detrimental to the results of your treatment. Here’s what you need to know about successfully preserving those perfect teeth.

A Guide to Regular Retainer Wear

Honolulu, HI retainerWhat Is a Retainer?

Retainers are custom devices designed to fit over your teeth. Usually made of rubber or medical-grade plastic, they may be either permanent or removable depending on your orthodontist’s recommendation. A permanent device is not visible since it’s bonded to the backside of the teeth. The wearer may experience tightness or pressure for a few days, but that discomfort should subside as the teeth grow accustomed to the retainer.

How Long Should It Be Worn?

Your orthodontist will prescribe a plan based on the condition of your teeth. For stubborn teeth that took a long time to straighten, you may be advised to wear a retainer full time for six months to a year. Once this period ends, the device is worn every night for a lifetime. If you have a permanent retainer, it may be left on for as many as five years.

What Happens If You Don’t Wear Them Regularly?

The retention phase of your treatment is an essential part of the process. Neglecting to wear the retainer will allow teeth to return to their original position. Usually, you won’t need to visit an orthodontist once fitted for a retainer, so the responsibility falls on you to commit to regular wear. If the teeth don’t have a chance to stabilize, you may eventually need braces or Invisalign again.
