Whether you’re building a home or renovating your existing house, insulation is a vital factor to consider. Insulation helps prevent heat from flowing from outside the home to the inside or vice versa, allowing you to keep your interior at a comfortable temperature year-round. In general, every surface of your home that contacts outside air should be insulated, but the following areas are especially vulnerable to heat loss.

Where to Put Insulation

1. Attic

InsulationRoof insulation helps seal the top of your home, protecting it from both hot roof shingles and from losing rising heat in the winter. If your attic space is not finished or heated, you might put insulation under the floor of the attic instead.

2. Exterior Walls

Any wall that touches unheated or unconditioned space is treated as an exterior wall for the purposes of insulation. This includes walls bordering your garage and other spaces that are not included in the home’s HVAC plan.

3. Floors Over Unheated Space

If your second floor extends over your garage, the floor space in this area will also have to be sealed against heat transfer. You may need to lower the garage ceiling somewhat to accommodate the insulation material.

4. Basement

Basement insulation can be included in your foundation when it is first laid or added afterward. If your basement is unfinished and not heated, it should be treated the same as an unheated garage, with the insulation placed in the floor above.

5. Doors & Windows

Doors and windows permit the transfer of heat more than walls and require unique insulating strategies. Choose double-paned glass filled with inert gas to slow heat transfer, and make sure all window and door frames are properly sealed and caulked to prevent airflow.
