Dump truck drivers in Hawaii, like those across the nation, must follow specific laws and regulations for public safety. Hawaii adheres to the Federal Bridge Formula for the gross weight limit on Interstate highways, but all other public roads, streets, and highways follow state laws. Before you partner with a trucking company for your construction site, make sure their drivers uphold these laws.

Hawaii Laws Dump Truck Drivers Must Be Aware Of

Federal Vehicle Weight Limits

The Federal Bridge Law applies the formula W = 500 ( LN/(N-1) + 12N + 36 ) to vehicle weight limits on interstate highways in Hawaii

  • W = the maximum weight in pounds carried on any group of two or more axles computed to the nearest 500 pounds
  • L = the distance in feet between the extremes of any group of two or more consecutive axles, to the nearest foot

The FBF allows a maximum gross vehicle weight of no more than 80,00 pounds on interstate highways, but the maximum weight for each individual truck depends on the number of axles and distance in feet between the axles.

State Vehicle Weight Limits

dump trucks Hawaii law, however, doesn’t take the number of axles into account. Dump trucks must calculate weight on state and local roads using the formula W = 900 (L + 40), and the total weight cannot equal more than 88,000 pounds. For the most part, a 7-axle super dump truck is recommended for most purposes, allowing up to 73,800 pounds when hauling gravel, sand, dirt, rock, or cinder.

Vehicle Size Limits

The state has specific regulations on vehicle size for straight dump trucks. The maximum width is 108 inches, length is 45 feet, and height is 14 feet. Federal regulations limit width to 102 inches, but length and height limits are determined by each state. These length restrictions are standard, but can vary based on the type of vehicle. For example, a semi-trailer bottom dump truck cannot be more than 48 feet in length per Hawaii’s regulations.
