If the car breaks down and you’re stranded on the side of the road, the first task you’ll probably do is call for roadside assistance. Though the tow truck will arrive promptly, there are a few precautions to take. Here are a few tips to stay safe while you wait for help.

What to Do While You’re Waiting for Roadside Assistance

1. Move to a Well-Lit Area

Try to stop near a street light or in an illuminated parking lot, if possible. If you’re on a particularly dark road, turn on the hazard lights and carefully place flares, flags, or triangles around the vehicle. This will maximize visibility, prevent other drivers from hitting you, and keep you from being harassed while you wait.

2. Keep Your Phone Handy

3. Use a Safety Kit

If you have a safety kit available in the car, retrieve the flashlight to navigate in the dark. Have your jumper cables ready, just in case. The kit should also contain bottled water and nonperishable foods to hold you over if you have to wait a long time for help.

4. Stay in the Vehicle

Once you take the above precautions, get back in the vehicle and don’t exit it again until assistance arrives. Lock the doors, roll up the windows, and keep the interior lights on. This will protect you from oncoming traffic and will keep you from being burglarized.
