Mastering the art of eating with chopsticks can be difficult, especially when you don’t use these utensils on a regular basis. However, it’s a popular method in various parts of the world and is commonly used to consume poke, a Hawaiian dish made of marinated raw fish, fresh vegetables and rice. Use the following tips to help hone your chopstick wielding skills.

How to Use Chopsticks to Eat Poke

1. Position the First Stick

The first step is to position one chopstick on the ring finger and the base of the thumb on your dominant hand. Use the middle finger to stabilize it against the thumb.

2. Add The Second Stick

Once you’ve secured the first chopstick, rest the second stick on the middle finger and the base of the thumb. Pinch this chopstick with the index finger and thumb to maintain stability while allowing for an up and down movement.

3. Open & Close the Chopsticks

pokeWhen both chopsticks are in place, try moving them. Draw your index finger in an upwards motion to bring the second chopstick up. Relax the finger to allow both sticks to come together again. Some find that holding the chopsticks closer toward the end offers more control while others prefer staying in the middle.

4. Secure the Poke

If you feel comfortable with the motion, then it’s time to use the chopsticks to eat. Thankfully, poke’s cube shape makes it easy to grip. With the chopsticks securely in hand, raise the top stick up to open them up. Position them around the poke and bring the index finger back down to secure it. Draw it up to your mouth and only release once the food has touched your tongue.
