Individuals of different faiths have a diverse set of beliefs and customs surrounding the end of one’s life. In their own ways, all seek to honor the dead and cultivate meaning and community as a loved one passes. Here is a look at how a few religions approach funeral services.

A Guide to Different Types of Funeral Services

1. Catholicism

funeral serviceCatholics believe in holding a wake the evening before the funeral service. Friends and family gather in front of the deceased to pay a last visit and come together as a community. The next day, there is a funeral mass in a church as well as a graveside ceremony. Hymns and readings are generally preferred by a priest or loved ones.

2. Judaism

In the Jewish faith, it’s prescribed that the burial occurs as quickly as possible after the death occurs. Tradition calls for burial rather than cremation, and the body is not to be displayed at any point. The Kaddish is recited during the funeral service; afterward begins a period of grief known as Shiva — when guests visit the home of the bereaved.

3. Hinduism

In the Hindu religion, it is customary to cremate the body. In some cases, the family may keep the ashes in an urn, while in others it’s acceptable to scatter them in a river — or holy waters. Mourners should wear white, not black, and expect that the funeral will happen soon after the death.
