Moving is usually stressful, whether you’re temporarily keeping belongings in a storage unit or relocating to a new house. However stressful the packing process may be, making sure you pack the right items is always important. Believe it or not, when you hire a moving truck, some items cannot be taken onboard. Here are a few of the most common household items you need to transport yourself.

3 Items Never to Pack on a Moving Truck

1. Flammable Materials

A surprisingly large number of household items are flammable. This includes cleaning supplies, charcoal, garden soil with fertilizer, and batteries. These items are prohibited by most moving companies and should be transported in your car rather than on the moving truck. Similarly, never place these items in storage, as they could be hazardous to other units in the same building.

2. Plants

StorageIt may be tempting to transport that large ficus tree in your moving truck, but it’s something you should avoid. Not only are the pots likely to break in transit, but the plant stands a good chance of dying on the journey. While on the road, a moving team doesn’t have time to stop and check the contents of the truck. This means they won’t be able to water the tree on the drive. Instead, leave your plants in the back seat of your car or in the trunk where you can tend to them.

3. Food Items

Though it seems like common sense, many people pack up their pantry and place it in storage or on a moving truck. Unfortunately, this is something you should steer clear of doing. Food attracts pests, which endanger the safety of the rest of your belongings on the moving truck. If possible, use up your perishable items before you’re ready to move. This way, you can buy fresh food when you get to your new home and spare the rest of your items from pests.
