Flossing is a basic part of dental care that children should learn from a young age. However, many parents actually use the wrong technique and pass that on. To ensure your child develops healthy dental care  habits for life, the friendly pediatric dentists at Pedodontic Associates in Honolulu, HI, are here to share their comprehensive guide to help you and your child floss properly.

How to Floss

1. Cut the Floss & Wrap It Around Your Fingers

dental careTake a piece of floss about 18 inches long and wind it around most of your middle finger, leaving about six inches between your fingers. You and your child may need to practice a few times so that you both become familiar with the motion.

2. Guide the Floss In Between the Teeth

Using your thumb and index fingers, place the floss in between two teeth and curve it around the tooth creating a “C shape. Gently slide the floss up and down the side of the tooth, including under the gum line,  Do the same for the adjacent tooth in the same crevice.  Do not pull it back and forth. Repeat for each of the teeth. Demonstrate for your child, and allow them to practice for themselves.

3. Rinse With Mouthwash

After flossing, if your child can spit well, encourage your child to rinse with a kid-friendly mouthwash. This will remove any loose or lingering food debris from the teeth and gums, as well as any blood from flossing.

In addition to flossing and brushing their teeth daily, your child should see a pediatric dentist twice a year for routine cleanings.
